Almotamar.net - More than seven-thousand members of local councils allover the Yemeni provinces begin Saturday the election process of the capital mayor and governors of provinces in a first of its kind practice, in accordance with legal provisions and accurate organisationl regulation. The elections are aimed at expanding powers of the local rule, enhancement of decentralization and activation of the local authority role in Yemen.
Preliminary statistics indicate that committees supervising elections have on Friday provided 6666, out of 7495, local councils members with cards for practicing election of governors. These local council members that represent local councils in Yemen governorates and districts, constitute the Electoral College to elect governors.
With the conclusion of the polling process for the election of governors on Saturday the General People's Congress (GPC), the ruling party in Yemen, would have exceeded the final phase in a first experiment of the election of governors and achieving a new victory in enhancement of the principle of peaceful transfer of power as a major goal of the step of electing governors of provinces.
Despite of boycotting of the election of governors by the opposition Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) the step has received large-scale people's welcome and interaction, as results of these elections represent an importance connected to development in the local society.
Local and foreign organizations and media take part in observation of the elections and would oversee the process of the election of the capital mayor and governors of provinces and for facilitating their task they have been provided with necessary cards for hat purpose.
In 2007 the opposition Yemen Congregation for Reform (Islah) Islamic oriented Party maintained its having political and media sway over the Joint meeting Parties (JMP) block, also consisting of Yemen Socialist Party and the Nasserite Unionist Organisation.
