Almotamar.net - Yemen is to host the UN ESCWA 25th Ministerial Session in late of this month. On the sidelines of the session the Yemeni government would organize an exhibition on investment and mineral and tourist wealth in Yemen.
The ESCWA said holding the session in the Yemeni capital Sana'a bears more than one meaning as it is an occasion where ESCWA gives Yemen a special importance as one of the least developed countries and presently facing great challenges in implementing the work programme for the least developed countries for the period 2001-2010 and in implementing the development goals of the millennium.
The session which is held under the theme "Financing for Development in the ESCWA region" is considered the main apparatus that draws up ESCWA's biennium general policies and attended by a large number of ministerial delegations representing the ESCWA member states in addition to senior official personalities from Yemen and accredited diplomatic missions.
A press release of the ESCWA, almotamar.net obtained a copy of it, said the ministerial session is the governing body of the Commission and is normally held once every two years, in even years.
The twenty-fifth session of ESCWA shall be held in Sana'a from 26- 29 May 2008 in two segments, namely: the Senior Official’s segment inaugurated on Monday, 26 May 2008; and the Ministerial segment inaugurated on Wednesday, 28 May 2008. The theme of the twenty-fifth Commission session is "Financing for Development in the ESCWA region".
In addition to discussing the various activities undertaken by the Secretariat since the twenty-fourth session, the work programme of the current biennium and the draft strategic framework for the 2010-2011 biennium, the twenty-fifth session of the Commission will address the following key issues in the Western Asia region:
• Implementation of the Monterrey Consensus in the West Asia region;
• Regional Cooperation for achieving the Millennium Development Goals;
• Signature of the Convention on International Multimodal Transport of Goods in the Arab Mashreq;
• Establishment of an Arabic Language Centre at ESCWA;
• Consideration of the request for membership in the Commission by the Sudan.
