Almotamar.net - The Head of the Information Office at the General People’s Congress (GPC) Tareq al-Shamy has accused the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) of practicing political misleading, saying the amendments of the elections law that have been approved had been submitted and proposed by parties of the JMP and there had been voting on them article by article by the members of parliament in 2008, including those members who are staging the sit-in.
In his interview to Al-Arabiya TV Channel , al-Shamy has made it clear that the subject of formation of the Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum (SCER) from judges was a proposal presented by the JMP and had been signed on in the principles agreement in 2006 but then they turned against it .
Al-Shamy added that what has happened now is the final voting on amendments of the elections law after they had been voted on article by article unanimously by all members of the parliament.
He clarified that taking that move by the GPC came because there is an attempt to use the dialogue for hindering the elections and said, “ Now we have just four months to go for the date of the constitutional right and it is not possible in any event to allow preventing the people from the right to choose their representatives at the parliament ,” affirming that the elections are for the people and the people are owners of the interest and they are who would defend their right by electing their representatives in the legislative power.”
Al-Shamy has emphasized keenness of his party on participation of all the parties in the elections and said “we are keen on participation of the JMP and all political forces in the elections and keen on that there would be political accord,” but al-Shamy affirmed the GPC’s refusal of dealing with the elections and the dialogue according to the political whims and moods and based on narrow partisan interests. He added that this is a refused matter and it is not possible to exploit or use the political pressure for impeding the elections because they are the sole means for the peaceful transfer of power.
Al-Shamy added, “We have gone far with the JMP in the dialogue and went towards an initiative for forming a coalition government for carrying out what had been agreed on and results of the dialogue. We have gone even beyond that for forming a coalition government even after the parliamentary elections. We have offered many concessions but unfortunately whatever concessions were made by the GPC they were met with more obstinacy by the JMP.”
Responding to a question by the TV Channel on existence of a European mediation between the GPC and the JMP , al-Shamy said, “ Firstly all must realise that the constitution is the reference and judge in the relations between the state and the society and it also regulates the political and partisan life and consequently any attempt for offering advices or an attempt to persuade parties of the JMP against going towards arousing the street or instigating it, we hope that would be actual. “ he added the problem is that the parties of the JMP listen to outside and international organisations and try to introduce themselves to those organisations more than trying to present themselves to the people and the society.
Al-Shamy reiterated that the dialogue for the GPC is a principle saying, “We are who called for the dialogue, we are who demanded the accord with regard to the political reforms, reforming the electoral system, formation of the SCER and made concessions for that end but up until now more than one year and eight months have passed and nothing has been achieved.
He said it is not possible in any event reaching a state of hindering the elections again, “we have suffered much in the past months from the brothers in the JMP because of what they put forward of impractical conditions, having nothing to do with February agreement. “
