China will build power plants in Yemen with total output capacity of 2,000 MW, Electricity Minister Saleh Sumai said on Sunday.
During President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi's visit to China, agreements were signed to build two power plants using coal in Belhaf and Ma'abar, each with a capacity of 400 MW and two others each with a capacity of 600 MW using coal and Diesel, Sumai said at a news conference.
Besides building power plants, the agreements also include installing power cables and Safer-Ma'abar gas pipeline, the Minister added.
"The start of the implementation of these power projects is waiting for the signing of the loan agreements. For this purpose, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation will head in the coming days for China. In addition, there are some routine procedures of the loan agreement approval, negotiation on price with the Chinese side and some sessions on projects' details and then signing the final agreements, which will take almost a year."
The Minister said that President Hadi asked his Chinese counterpart for funding power projects with capacity of 5,000 MW, adding "the Chinese President has agreed in principle to finance these projects in phases and to begin projects that have been studied."
He stressed that the Chinese side expressed its readiness to finance any power projects whatever they cost.
Sumai described the President's visit to China, concluded last Friday, as historic and fruitful.
Moreover, Yemen and China signed an agreement worth $507 million to expand the Aden Container Terminal (ACT).
