Almotamar.net - The European Union (EU) has affirmed that the recent airstrikes on Hodeida port imposed an immediate hindrance to imports food, fuel, medicines and other supplies.
A joint Statement by the Spokespersons of the High Representative / Vice-President Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides on the bombings in Yemen of port facilities in Hodeida said:
“The current conflict in Yemen is having a dramatic impact on the civilian population whose needs have reached alarming proportions. Access for the delivery of humanitarian aid and essential supplies, including fuel, food and basic commodities to ordinary Yemenis remains extremely difficult.
The recent airstrikes and shelling of Hodeida port facilities have created an additional and immediate obstacle to the import of food, fuel, medicines and other critical goods to alleviate some of the most pressing needs of the population.
The EU calls on all parties to the conflict to refrain from deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure. The EU urges all parties to rapidly engage in a process to put an end to the conflict.
At this very moment, a predictable and sustainable humanitarian pause is essential to prevent the further deepening of this humanitarian catastrophe.
The EU fully supports the efforts of UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmed, to resume inclusive negotiations and calls on all Yemeni parties to resume political dialogue without preconditions.
On the 5th of August the European Commission increased its humanitarian aid by a further €12 million for people affected by the crisis in Yemen, bringing the total contribution allocated to €37million in 2015. This support helps address the most pressing needs of the suffering population.
