Almotamar.net - Head of the parliamentary bloc the General People's Congress (GPC) Sultan al-Barakani said Saturday the Joint Meeting Parties (JMP) asked for postponement of the upcoming parliamentary elections for more than 30 times, pointing out that the GPC had refused that.

At the first meeting of the parliament in its second session al-Barakani affirmed the opposition parties of the JMP responded to the GPC refusal by their attempts to hinder holding the elections on their time in April in 2009 and he expected continuation of their failure in that as it was expressed by results of the local elections in 2006.

Al-Barakani added that the GPC endeavour to for accord with the opposition is not alternative to the constitution. He wondered that the GPC and the JMP continue negotiating on names of candidates of parties for the Supreme Commission for Elections and Referendum (SCER) for three months and then the JMP comes to say that its bodies had not met to name the candidates. Al-Barakani demanded them to solve their crises without throwing them on the GPC and the parliament.

Opposition MPs focused in the meeting on challenging legitimacy of the parliament meeting last August when the parliament dropped amendments of the elections law and nomination of names of the SCER.

And as it seems an Islah party attempt for not getting involved in the adventure of boycotting the elections, head of the Islah parliamentary bloc Abdulrahman Bafadhl suggested approval of amending the law and the parliament to rename members of the SCER, affirming that the JMP has prepared names of its four candidates for the Commission.

Deputy Head of the GPC parliamentary bloc Yasser al-Awadi called on the opposition to present their challenge to Constitutional Committee at the Supreme Court and confirmed legitimacy of names and members of the SCER.
