almotamar.net - The United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) on Tuesday called on the Yemeni government to intensify commitment to end the practice of female circumcision, requesting all governments to protect rights of women and girls.
The UNFPA appealed to the leaders to take measures for ending the practice of female circumcision in line with the decision taken by the United Nations last year. The governments repeated their confirmation that female circumcision as constituting violation of the rights of women and girls and considering hat practice a type of harm tat there is no way for correcting it or reversing its results. They have mentioned many medical indications that the circumcision of females forms a threat to the health of women and girls and doubles the possibility of their affection with AIDS and the danger of mortality of mothers and infants as will as harming their psychological, sexual and reproduction health.
Despite of these conclusions estimates indicate that around 100 to 140 million women and girls all over the world were subject to this practice while there are 3 million other girls are facing the danger of being exposed to circumcision every year.
In harmony with the UN resolutions the UNFPA appeals to governments to draw up effective policies for putting an end to female circumcision.
In a message, almotamar.net received a copy of it, the executive manager of the UNFPA Thuraya Ahmed Abid urged all decision-makers at al levels to play leading roles for eliminating this practice. She appealed to the national and local leaders to provide necessary support for creating preventative and awareness programmes that take into consideration the beliefs and the reality at the local level. The UNFPA pledged to increase its support for the efforts aimed at ending the practice of female circumcision.
